1992 – 1997 Ford Trucks, Vans, RV and Broncos PSOM Style Gauge Repair Service
Product Description
Our Repair Service covers and includes all of the following:
1) Loss of speedometer & odometer simultaneously (make sure fuses #8 & #18 are not blown or loose in holder), sometimes the fuses are not blown but can have a poor connection so the terminals will need to be cleaned and tightened at the fuse block)
* If there is a dead short blowing fuse disconnect the center speedometer connector to verify if problem is in speedometer or somewhere else in the vehicle. A burning smell may indicate a shorted Air Bag Diagnostic Monitor if PSOM is not the cause which is located in the center of the dash. Contact us for a list of other possibilities that can cause the fuse to blow.
2) Speedometer needles that bounce excessively at all speeds
3) Harsh transmission shifting caused by intermittent or complete loss of transmission VSS output signal to PCM
4) Flashing error message on odometer screen
5) Blank odometer screen or odometer is flashing ERROR
6) Poor idle or stalling conditions when clutch is let out (unplugging PSOM or VSS makes problem go away)
7) Flashing OD light and setting of trouble code 452 or PO500
8) Clusters are thoroughly cleaned and burnt backlighting and warning lamps are replaced
9) Tachometer is tested for proper operation and repaired as needed (if equipped)
* If tachometer is not repairable and needs replaced we can replace for additional fee
10) Restoration of faded gauge needles and gear shift indicator (where applicable)
11) Lens is lightly polished to remove light scratches and help restore clarity (New Lenses are Available for $49)
12) Speedometer is tested and VSS output signal to PCM is lab scoped for correct waveform before and after repair.
Attention: If PSOM board has excessive corrosive damage, underlying tarnish problems, short circuit damage or unsatisfactory previous repair attempts were made, then a replacement PSOM circuit board will be necessary to ensure a proper operation and there will be an additional $149 charge added to the repair service.
NOTICE: If you do not want to send your entire cluster in or be without your vehicle, we offer a PSOM board exchange service which is $329 plus a $149 core fee.
You will receive a core credit refund if a rebuild-able core is returned to us.
A rebuild-able core would be one that does not have excessive corrosive damage, short circuit damage or component detachment issues.
For PSOM Board Exchange we will just need your year, make, model, mileage and E 0- / CAL Code.
To retrieve the CAL code you will need to hold the reset button down and then turn the key on. The speedometer needle will sweep and display something like E08 6, push the reset button again and it will display the 3 or 4 digit CAL code that we need to program your replacement board.
Contact us for details on doing the exchange program.
Additional replacement parts
1) New OEM replacement lenses - $49
2) Used LCD screen and ribbon assembly - $45
3) Used shift indicator cables - $45
4) Used shift cable mounting bracket - $45
5) Used speedometer heads - $45
6) Tachometers and Gauge pods - Call for price
7) Replacement PSOM boards - $149 (plus service)
* KM to Miles conversions are available upon request, please call for a quote
* We can also reset the lock-out count for speedometer calibration or program your PSOM for speedometer calibration upon request but in order to do so we will need to know how far your speedometer is off and in which direction since we do not calibrate to the tire size.
NOTICE: If you are only experiencing a minor speedometer needle waiver in the 50-70 mph range then this repair service will usually not help because there is most likely an external issue. A weak VSS, excessive VSS air gap or chipped tone ring tooth are the most common causes and it is very important to only use a factory Ford VSS since aftermarket parts do not have the same tolerances and have reportedly caused needle fluctuation.
In some cases needle waiver or excessive bounce at higher speeds can be remedied by filing down the VSS mounting tab to adjust the air gap clearance between the sensor and the tone ring when replacement of the the VSS itself does not correct the issue has been very effective in eliminating needle fluctuation. Also check the VSS terminal pins for corrosion and correct fit.
For inoperative speedometers ONLY first suspect VSS or VSS wiring problems and on Broncos with 4 wheel ABS the ABS Module itself can be at fault causing this and can be bypassed at the ABS Module plug for testing purposes and process of elimination.
Speedometer Bounce Issues:
Some of the common problems to look for if you are experiencing a minor fluctuation of the speedometer needle in the higher speeds are listed in order of importance below.
To effectively diagnose VSS or speedometer bounce issues a lab scope is recommended to test the input and output waveform patterns at the PSOM itself but you can start at the VSS to eliminate anything there as the cause. Waveform patterns are the only way to clearly see what is going on in real time and see glitches and weak signals that would otherwise go undetected.
A faulty input will cause a faulty output pattern usually caused by one or more of the conditions listed below.
1) VSS is faulty or damaged (specs are 900 - 2500 ohms)
Note: Use a Factory speed sensor if available, aftermarket ones are more problematic and may require filing down of the mounting pad to decrease the air gap (Ford part # DY-1123 in most cases)
2) Excessive VSS air gap ( .015" - .020" spec ) File down mounting side of VSS with flat file to adjust clearance
3) Tone ring has chipped, dented or has to much run out
4) Antilock Brake Module faulty and pulling down output signal making it weak (Unplug antilock brake module to see if problem goes away and strong signal output is restored to verify module fault)
5) VSS connector or wiring damage on the frame rail
6) Differential side bearing play or excessive differential wear
7) Excessive driveline angles from suspension lifts
8) 3 piece drivelines used in RV and Heavy Duty trucks
