My 2006 Altima died and left me stranded. I knew enough about mechanics to suspect it was the fuel pump. Got it replaced, but a week or two later it died again. Discovered my fuel gauge wasn't working. Thinking I may have gotten a bad sending unit in my new fuel pump I replaced it again. Gauge still didn't work. Thought it must be the wire from the sending unit to the gauge. Just used my trip odometer as a fuel gauge and ignored it.
Then I started getting a CHECK ENGINE LIGHT code P0420 (low fuel gauge input voltage). In NY State it won't pass inspection with this code. So I searched Google for info about this code and Nissan Altimas. Discovered it was a known issue with Altimas and other Nissans.
This led me to Clusterfix.com on eBay. They told me this was indeed a very common issue with these car's fuel gauges. Removed the instrument cluster easily, six screws, shipped it to them, got it back in less than a week, problem solved! This all took course over a period of two years from the initial problem.
I am a car mechanic (or was) with a full set of tools, but there was no way to test for this problem, it took me months to even suspect it! And $250 to have it fixed was a bargain. If I had just taken my car to a shop to have the problem fixed I would have spent at least $1000 just in diagnostic fees, with no guarantee of it being fixed.
Wish I had found them sooner!
